Circumstances around COVID-19 have been pushing us to come up with new ways to work in all fields, in all environments, from working in a harsh manufacturing environment, open office spaces, or even outdoors. To ensure a safe working environment for all, our work with Trumpf has been a priority.
The solution works with the help of tags/wearables that employees take at the start of the day, carry it with them during their work, and leave them before finishing the day. The solution’s dashboard shows in real-time, how many, for how long, and which tags have been closer than the safe distance. And in the case of COVID-19 infection, all people possibly infected are immediately identified.
Social Distancing Solution is in accordance with GDPR, which means that the focus is only on recording contacts closer than the safe distance your company determines – it doesn’t record any information about where the employees have been or how they move.
The Social Distancing Solution works on the top of a central software component implemented by Heidelberg Mobil, Germany, as a part of a new open locating-standard. Additionally, the Solution has the possibility to be easily adapted and upgraded toward specific needs. In order to determine when the safety distance has been undercut, the solution uses ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology, which Trumpf already relies on for its Track&Trace indoor localization solution. Like WLAN, Bluetooth, or RFID, UWB works on the basis of radio signals in the form of electromagnetic waves. The radio technology also provides stable results in sheet metal production, where metal, machines, and bearings made of steel, reflect waves and make localization difficult. That is why UWB offers the precision of a few centimeters, much better than other technologies.
